Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival 2025: Competition Lineup & Jury Revealed! 🎬🌍 (2025)

A Cinematic Reflection of Our Troubled Times

The Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, a cultural beacon in Estonia, has unveiled its competition lineup for the 29th edition, offering a thought-provoking glimpse into the world's current state.

But here's where it gets controversial: the festival's director, Tiina Lokk, suggests that this year's selection is a mirror to our world's anxieties and vulnerabilities. With a diverse range of films from over 100 countries, the competition features 17 feature films, including 16 world premieres and one international premiere.

"Everything that worries and pains us is there," Lokk observes. From wars and environmental crises to political arrogance and migration, the films tackle a range of pressing global issues. And this is the part most people miss: the festival also highlights the fragility of family life and women's rights, themes that often go unnoticed in mainstream discussions.

Asia, Latin America, and Spain have made strong submissions, with the latter being the only country with two films in the competition. The festival's focus on Catalan films has resulted in the inclusion of JΓΊlia de Paz Solvas' "The Good Daughter" and Anxos FazΓ ns' "The Dashed Lines," a warm tale about divorce.

The international jury, chaired by Macedonian filmmaker Teona Strugar Mitevska, brings together a diverse group of experts, including Emmy-nominated fashion designer Debra McGuire and Mongolian producer Nomuunzul Turmunkh. This jury will have the challenging task of evaluating these thought-provoking films.

So, what do you think? Is cinema a powerful tool for reflecting and discussing global issues? Or should it serve as an escape from the harsh realities of the world? Let us know in the comments!
